THE SOCIAL DILEMMA

TESTIMONY

After watching 'The Social Dilemma,' I learned a lot about how technology affects us. The movie shows how social media and technology companies try to keep us using their apps all the time. They use tricks to make us stay on our phones or computers, like showing us ads that we can't resist clicking on. One scary thing is how much time we spend online instead of talking to people face-to-face. It made me think about how I use technology and how it might be affecting me. The movie also talks about how technology can make people feel bad about themselves and even change how they think about important issues. Overall, 'The Social Dilemma' made me realize that we need to be careful about how much time we spend online and think about how it affects us and others

DEC. OF IND. OF CYBERSPACE

In this declaration, Barlow asserts that cyberspace is a unique and separate realm from the physical world, governed by its own rules and principles. He argues for the autonomy of cyberspace, free from government regulation and control, and emphasizes the importance of individual freedom and creativity in this digital domain. The declaration expresses a vision of cyberspace as a decentralized, democratic space where individuals can interact freely and express themselves without interference from external authorities. It calls for the protection of privacy, free speech, and innovation in the digital realm.

'QUOTES'

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”-- Arthur C. Clarke

“If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product” — Daniel Hövermann

“If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product” — Daniel Hövermann

“We curate our lives around this perceived sense of perfection because we get rewarded in these short term signals: hearts, likes, thumbs up and we conflate that with value and we conflate it with truth. And instead, what it is is fake brittle popularity that’s short term and that leaves you even more, and admit it, vacant and empty before you did it. Because that enforces you into a vicious cycle where you’re like what’s the next thing that I need to do now, because I need it back. Think about that compounded by two billion people and then think about how people react to them, to the perceptions of others.” — Chamath Palihapitiya, CEO of Social Capital

OFF THE RECORD

I absolutely hated how eerie this documentary was. I had this gut wrenching feeling to look over my shoulder whilst on the internet and have this urge to have my phone off at all times to focus on what’s REALLY going on around me. As someone with ADHD, I know this has affected my attention span and the order of which things get done. Once my phone is opened, I’m more prone to fall into a downward spiral of attention grabs. I hate it so much.
